Portraits and Commissions by Jessica Henn, MFA

Jessica Henn

Around the time of my first birthday, my mom and dad bought their first NEW car. It glistened avocado green as they pulled it into the driveway for the first time. Ten minutes later, with rock in hand, I proceeded to scratch little silver colored circles in the door panel. My parents did not appreciate one of my first artistic endeavors.

My art has come a long way from circles scratched in car paint. I have realized through teaching and painting that art is not only about skill, but also about passion and creativity. I have always had natural talent, but talent without passion produces paintings that lack life.

My paintings are all about recreating life, in a moment. My canvases, whether of people, animals, or landscapes, capture a fleeting moment in time, beautiful in uniqueness. I revel in finding and painting beauty in small forgotten objects, the faces of my family, and little noticed plants and animals. It is always stimulating and challenging to me to continue to stretch my conceptualization and continue to grow as an artist and a teacher.
